Attendance Policy
Grading Policy
A student should spend approximately 40 minutes a night working on homework assignments.
Math and Reading homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday. It is due on Friday.
Students are also expected to complete literacy station/extension work daily in class. Students will be given ample time to complete the activities in class if they use their time wisely. Unfinished station/extension work, will be taken home as homework.
Scarborough Huskies are expected to read 20 minutes nightly in addition to their regularly assigned homework, which amounts to 80 minutes a week. iStation Reading gives students valuable practice and counts as their 20 minutes of nightly reading.
It is vital that students are fluent with the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. These should be practiced nightly. Four Think Through Math lessons should be completed each week.
Log in information for iStation and Think Through Math will be sent home as soon as it becomes available.
Because of extra-curricular activities and various families’ schedule, I do allow some flexibility with the reading log. Therefore, I will only check the homework log on Friday mornings to see that the 80 minutes of Reading and 4 TTM lessons were completed. This way, the 80 minutes of reading and 4 TTM lessons can be completed at any time during the school week or the weekend. If homework is not completed, it will be recorded on the student’s behavior calendar.
Each student is responsible for obtaining a parent signature every day of the school week in their agenda.
Bonus Recess Policy
Maximizing your child’s learning experience and developing positive socialization with peers and adults are two of our top priorities here at Scarborough. One area we feel maximizes that learning is respectful behavior in the classroom and around the building. Students have the opportunity every week to earn an extra 20 minute recess on Friday afternoon in addition to their regular recess that day.
Each week, the classroom teacher will look at each student’s behavior calendar to see if any infractions occurred during the week. For a student to be eligible for the 2o-minute bonus recess on Friday, the student must NOT have received any infractions for the week, and they must have their behavior calendar signed from the previous week.
If the student DID receive an infraction that week, they did not meet the reward recess criteria for that week, so they will attend a 20 minute study hall on that particular Friday. Again, students do have an opportunity each week to try and earn the reward recess.
We feel that by rewarding students for consistent positive behavior that it will heighten the learning and positive interaction that is done each day in the classroom
The snack MUST be on the list in order for
your child to eat it during the designated snack time.
If your child brings a snack that is not on the approved list,
then they will not be allowed to eat it until lunch.
APPROVED SNACK ITEMS
Fruits and Veggies
Peanut butter
Crackers
Pretzels
Granola bars
Cereal bars/Dry Cereal/Pop Tarts
Yogurt(bring a disposable spoon)
Beef Jerky
Trail Mix
Cheese (cubes, string, etc.)
If snack time interferes with learning time, snack time will be stopped.
WATER BOTTLES
Your child may also bring in a water bottle to have at their desk during the day that meets these guidelines.
Brain research indicates that being hydrated gives people more potential to think clearly. The best way to hydrate is with PURE water. Please encourage your child to bring water, as the water fountain is not near the classroom and drink breaks will be taken as a class at scheduled times.
STAAR testing happens 3 times in 4th grade:
March 28: STAAR Writing
May 8: STAAR Math
May 9: STAAR Reading
STAAR is not a promotion standard for 4th grade, however, data obtained from your student’s STAAR scores help our 5th grade teachers plan for your student because STAAR is a promotion standard in 5th grade. Please do not plan appointments or trips on STAAR testing days.

As the year goes on, opportunities for the use of cell phones and tablets will be happen on a daily basis in class. They are not required, but will be useful to your student. A permission slip will be sent home before we begin using them to enhance learning experiences.
I understand that students carry cell phones for safety reasons (particularly those who walk home after school). Cell phones are to remain set to silent or turned off in the student back pack. Students are responsible for their personal technology.
